The greastist disservice the council and port marlbrough did for education to aquatic life was to destroy the aquaium at picton the aquaium
The Council via Port Marlborough have increased the marinas that now allow a thousand or more births for recreational users of one of the iconic areas of New Zealand with apparent disregard to the effects on the aquatic life within the Sounds. The Aquarium was far more important to allow for the education of the life hidden under the waves and the introduction of methods the enhance the ecosystems that exist there, than a rotting old ship that commands large amounts of funds to keep it stable.
Has the Council planned any effective response for the restoration of an aquatic education facility in Picton?? Perhaps engage with the Queen Charlotte College, it is far more important for the future of the Sounds environment to have students with a knowledge of the marine ecosystems for leadership within a future council.
Why the contribution is important
The ocean provides an irreplaceable resource to all humankind. Unfortunately they have seen better days, pollution, overfishing, habitat distruction, ocean water temperatures are rising creating marine heat waves resulting in the loss of seaweeds plus changes to the food webs that results in changes and movement of marine life.
People power in many countries have now taken a new approch in helping the oceans, this partnership between people and nature is crucial for the oceans ecosystems and biodiversity stabillity. One of the greatest obstacles with the ocean is that unlike terrestrial plants and animals that are readily viewable, their aquatic counter parts are largely hidden and inacessible. This is where an Aquarium is so important to help introduce the people to life hidden beneath the waves.
