Information Display Boards
The area of whenua surrounding the walking track from Endeavour Park to Ranui Street and Waipuna Stream is a habitat for native birds that is a nesting and feeding area. It is a wetland area with recent restoration mahi by iwi te Atiawa who have a commitment for more plantings including along the Waipuna Stream. One Display Board can have information about the different native birds with photos. I have seen other towns with main sign have writing, Meet The Locals with names of birds and the habitat with protections about them. Another Display Board can be about the tuna in the Waipuna Stream, which was a mahinga kai in the past so has significant cultural and historical for not only my whanau and my iwi Te Atiawa. The walking track is well used for walkers but it is also used as a dog off leash dog park which do disturb the wild life by chasing the birds. Dogs also wade in the Waipuna Stream. Dogs are now starting to go into the recently planted wetland. The Dog Control Bylaw will need to be revisited to change from off leash to on leash from Admiralty Place to Huia Street. Dogs off leash have also wandered in the Waitohi Picton Community Garden through the wire fence line.
