Connect fragmented riparian margins

  • encourage connection of fragmented riparian margins and corridors throughout Marlborough including working with environmental groups such as Forest & Bird, Wairau Nature Network, Picton Dawn Chorus, Te Whanau Hou (Grovetown Lagoon), Kotahitanga mō Te Taiao Alliance, Kaikaiāwaro Charitable Trust, iwi. The approach is being taken in the Wairau and could be extended to other catchments including the Awatere.

Why the contribution is important

Only 4–11% of native vegetation remaining in the Wairau lowlands. This is below the 15% needed for species survival. The Wairau Nature Network brings communities together to restore and connect these habitats through Ecological Corridors. We're helping native species thrive and strengthening our landscape’s resilience.

By working together, we’re nurturing a healthier, more vibrant Wairau for current and future generations.
