Picton Business Group submission C1 – Waitohi-Picton Town Centre Beautification

Picton Business Group request that the Marlborough District Council assign funding as part of their Growing Marlborough Urban and Development Strategies (2010), for essential repairs, maintenance, beautification, and presentation work in the Picton town centre and its immediate surrounds.

Over the past 18 months, Picton Business Group, MDC Councillors and council staff have worked collaboratively, to identify a range of town centre issues, including health and safety concerns, chattel defects, and general maintenance needs (Planters, plantings, paving, crossings, bins, seating, fences, signage, bollards, painted areas). However, for numerous years, many of these projects have not been addressed due to an ongoing lack of apportioned / appointed funding.

Historically, Picton Business Group has contributed, either partly or fully, to the enhancement of public assets within the town CBD, and we intend to continue supporting this work. To strengthen this partnership, Picton Business Group proposes engaging with the local business community to encourage regular upkeep of buildings, shopfronts, and associated chattels. This approach aims to foster a shared commitment between council, businesses, and the wider community to maintain an attractive and welcoming town centre.

Why the contribution is important

Funding this initiative is essential in addressing critical maintenance, public safety, and beautification needs within the CBD.

A vibrant and attractive Waitohi-Picton creates a strong first impression, encouraging visitors to spend more time in the area and explore the wider Marlborough region. This supports local business growth by enhancing economic activity and enriches the region’s reputation.

By securing ongoing funding and actively engaging the business community, this initiative promotes shared responsibility and more efficient use of resources. It builds local pride, strengthens Waitohi-Picton’s reputation, and supports long-term economic vitality.

Ultimately, an appealing and well-cared-for CBD enhances community and social wellbeing, improves visitor experience, and contributes to the overall prosperity of Marlborough.
