Biodiversity Restoration of Victoria Domain

Biodiversity restoration Victoria Domain

Prior to the arrival of humans, the land that is now our Victoria Domain was a vibrant native forest with a beautiful and unique NZ biodiversity. The forest was home to numerous species of birds, lizards and insects.

The days began with the orchestral dawn chorus that so impressed Joseph Banks on arrival in Queen Charlotte Sound.

Then came forest clearance, for what proved to be unprofitable farming, and the introduction of predators.

Over many years PDC’s army of volunteers has achieved a significant reduction in predator numbers, now increasingly sustainable through the advent of sophisticated automatic traps.

PDC’s Ngahere tree planting volunteers have responded to a need for a greater and more varied food supply for the increasing bird and lizard populations, with a native tree planting program.

The new trees have already contributed to a richer biodiversity, and also a frequently applauded aesthetic improvement to the setting for the popular Waitohi-Picton to Waikawa track.

PDC’s work towards biodiversity restoration adds value to the region’s tourist industry, and to the quality of life of our community.

There is still much to do. I therefore submit that MDC increase it’s annual financial support to the Ngahere Groups on-going work.
