London Quay and Lower High Street Development

This Picton Business Group submission is one of four regarding the presentation and economic wellbeing of Picton, for the benefit of residents, businesses, and visitor experience, as well as flow-on benefit to the wider Marlborough community.

The key submissions this year relate to a long-term strategic plan for Picton, better presentation of the town and specific promised projects not yet completed.

Picton Business Group (PBG) request the funding allowance for the immediate development of London Quay and commencement of planning for lower High Street.

London Quay has been identified for many years as overdue for redevelopment. Robust consultation has been completed more than once, resulting in recent concept plans ready for final sign off. PBG urges MDC to continue the process and commit budget to completion.

Lower High Street is dated, run-down and (in parts) a health and safety risk. Paving tiles are slippery, cracked and damaged, chattels are mismatched. Painted railings are faded. Upper High Street was upgraded 10 years ago and once London Quay is completed PBG believe now is the time to develop lower High Street; connect and complete the modernisation of Picton CBD.

Why the contribution is important

This proposal is a good idea because it addresses urgent safety concerns and long-overdue upgrades to key areas of Picton’s CBD, ensuring the town remains attractive and functional for residents and visitors. Completing London Quay and modernizing lower High Street will create a cohesive and welcoming environment, enhancing Picton’s appeal as a destination.

These improvements will support local businesses, increase foot traffic, and reflect Picton’s importance as a hub within Marlborough. Investing in these upgrades ensures the town continues to thrive and positively represents the wider region.
