Electrify cruise ship buses
Replace the current fleet of old diesel buses with electric buses.
Old diesel buses are used in Picton to transport cruise ship passengers from and to ships berthed in Shakespeare Bay. They spend a lot of time idling in the middle of Picton.
The Marlborough Sounds sells itself on its environment so it shouldnt be too much to ask those visiting in large numbers to contribute to improving our environment.
As the distances traveled are small and the buses spend most of the day sitting waiting for passengers electric buses are ideal. As soon as they stop they arent using energy whereas idling diesles are not just using energy but causing significant toxic pollution.
The short distance travelled means that the buses would not need recharging during the day and the Z fast charger gets little use currently as well as there are few days when there are consequtive ships so recharging would not be an issue at all.
Why the contribution is important
1. It will assist MDC's decarbonisation goals
2. It will improve air quality in Picton
3. Aid Picton's marketing.
4. Improve Aoteoroa/NZ's current account balance by reducing demand for imported diesel.
