Continuation of Vickerman St/ Dillions Pt Rd Over Opawa River
After reading the long-term transport plan, I noted that a feasibility study would take place for a second river crossing off Dillions Point Road. This submission is regarding that proposal, as I see it it would be in the councils best interests to create another feeder road to the east of the town, as there is particular strains on infrastructure in regards to Sinclair Street and Grove Rd and Budge Street. I believe the continuation of Vickerman Street could join on to existing roading infrastructure in the Malthouse Rd area.
Vickerman Street currently joins onto SH1 North of the Town at Grovetown. The proposed roading improvement would be between there and Riverlands industrial estate. The current suggested improvements on Grove Rd, such as the Budge Street roundabout and the removal of the Park Terrace entrance at the Redwood Street roundabout, would likely cost more than a new bridge. If 30 Million was set aside for such roading improvements, functionally other roading improvements would be less urgent.
For these improvements, only 1.33km of road would need to be laid as well as a new bridge over the Opawa River see the proposal here Vickerman St Improvements
Why the contribution is important
This new road design will create a secondary feeder road that avoids central Blenheim. This is needed because of the increasing traffic on the roading network, created by excess urban development. This new road design will save money on local roads as it will redirect traffic currently travelling from north of Blenheim into the Riverlands and Cloudy bay industrial estates.
